Mission Statement

The National LGBT Helpline Number Project exists to provide access to a network of volunteer-run helplines who provide a non-judgmental, confidential, listening, support and information service for LGBT people, their families and friends

What happens when you call our helplines?

When you call one of our helplines during operating hours you will be answered after about 3 - 4 rings. If all our volunteers are busy you will hear a recorded message offering you other numbers you can call if your call is urgent, or inviting you to call back later. We do not place calls on hold.

If you call outside our operating hours you will hear a recorded message giving you other useful numbers and directing you to the website for further information.

Who Answers Callers?

When you call us your call will be answered by a volunteer from one of our member helplines.

All our volunteers are trained to the highest standard to ensure you of a great service and total confidentiality. You can see our confidentiality policy here.

You can download our confidentiality policy from the link on the right of this page.

Who are our Volunteers?

Our volunteers are people from all walks of life and of all ages. Most of our volunteers identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Some of our volunteers identify as transgender.

About our service

All our member helplines are autonomous local services. You can call any one of them directly and you can find the local number by clicking on the map on the home page for your area or here.

Our volunteers provide a confidential listening, support and information service. We do not provide counseling or advice but can point our callers to such services if that is what the caller wants.
